FAQs
Yes. We are a registered non-profit religious institution established in the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania under the Nonprofit Corporation Law of 1988. But we
are a unique Philosophical Union. We make no mention of any god or afterlife. Here is our holy place to be. For more information, check out our Call to Action
Yes. "You are my equal. And I am yours." is our creed. We call it our "Declaration of Truth"
No. We are not here to compete with any other religions or supernatural beings. The only requirement for membership is that you share our sincerely held belief: “You are my equal. And I am yours.” That's it. All are welcome.
Absolutely. Atheists and spiritual people alike are welcome and would be very much at home here. Everyone is included in equality.
No. You are never obligated to purchase anything nor pay a fee to become a member of TOGE or to get ordained.
We are an all-volunteer staff, and are funded to date entirely by founding members. We cover our ongoing costs of operation by charging a nominal fee for materials such as: membership cards, certificates, ordination credentials, notarized documentation, and so on. We keep costs for these as low as we possibly can. We want this to be easy and accessible. We also have a few groovy t-shirts, and we do accept donations, which are tax-deductible. But remember: no purchase is ever necessary to join, maintain membership, or to get ordained.
This is the short optional process by which a member is made an official representative of TOGE, our clergy, and as such has the legal authority to perform TOGE marriage ceremonies, which contain our Declaration of Truth, as well as engage in all other activities afforded to clergy.
No. We are focused on establishing the Declaration of Truth as a foundational pillar of society, from which beautiful, egalitarian social institutions can blossom. The institution of marriage is a powerful place to start, as marriage vows deliver the first words of a new union. This is the most intimate and powerful verbal exchange of a lifetime. These words are so transformative they create next-of-kin relationships from unrelated people, and form a family.
Declaring that “You are my equal. And I am yours,” is a fundamental element of every TOGE marriage. But TOGE’s Declaration of Truth must be the starting point for all interpersonal relationships. And to that end, we have much more in store: stay tuned.
A TOGE marriage always contains the Declaration of Truth: “You are my equal. And I am yours.” The individuals being joined in marriage exchange these words before their vows. Therefore, upon those first words all other elements of their relationship will stand. Naturally, all subsequent vows in a TOGE marriage must comport with this first declaration. Note: TOGE does not solemnize marriages of individuals under the age of eighteen, nor does it solemnize covenant marriages.
Yes, under current laws we are legal in all 50 states. Laws change, however, so we
can’t guarantee this will always be the case. Be sure and check the local jurisdiction where the ceremony will take place. See our Marriage Laws by State for details. We are here to help.
Yes! While many TOGE marriages are naturally solemnized free of charge for friends and family, it is also perfectly fine to charge a reasonable fee for your services. A beautiful marriage ceremony takes time to prepare and to deliver. This is worthy of compensation. Check with your local state or county jurisdiction for fair rate guidelines for a groovy side-hustle.
The ordination process is easy and should take only five-ten minutes. But they are
serious minutes. We ask that you review our very brief training module carefully before
accepting the responsibility of legally representing TOGE and equality. Once complete, ordination is immediate.
No. Once ordained you are ordained for life, there is no renewal required. You remain in good standing with TOGE and eligible to officiate marriages on our behalf as long as you continue to adhere to our sincerely held beliefs, perform marriages according to our requirements, and keep it legal. However, TOGE founders retain the right to terminate credentials, at their sole discretion, in the event of conduct out of line with our beliefs. NOTE: Child abuse results in immediate, and permanent expulsion.
A Temple is a place where like-minded people come together to celebrate their most cherished and fundamental core beliefs. For members of TOGE it is the core belief that all people are created equal: "You are my equal. And I am yours." This website is where we celebrate that.
Groovy Eyes naturally see groovy things. They look for truth always, and see equality. They also see that equality is not sameness and that diversity is our evolutionary crown. Groovy Eyes do not look upon love and see sin nor ugliness. They embrace equality as natural truth; creation’s most self-evident characteristic, and love as its binding and its purpose.
No. While the founders are located in and around Philadelphia (E-A-G-L-E-S!) Our Temple operates virtually so that everyone is able to participate equally, even those living with a disability, in care homes, or in remote locations.
Join us! Speak the Declaration of Truth to someone today. Speak it to a newborn. Teach it to your children. Say it to your neighbor. Say it to someone you disagree with.
Our objective is to lay down a grassroots foundation of equality upon which humanity can rebuild itself. The only way to do this is one relationship at a time. We must all speak the words sincerely and live accordingly.
If you choose to take the next action step, become an ordained member of TOGE clergy and solemnize the public formation of legal relationships based on this idea.
How beautiful equality is, and how beautiful we are in its pursuit.
We will be calling for submissions for our first issue of The Groovy Eye Journal shortly after we launch. Note -submissions are currently closed. All members will be able to submit art and writing for consideration. No target date as of yet, but we are working hard to produce our first issue in the Summer of 2026. Please check back often and watch for upcoming announcements as we pull it together. Our journal will be a place to share stories, art, and poetry in order to learn from each other and better solidify our Philosophical Union through understanding of one another. Armed with knowledge, we become genuine and effective allies in the singular pursuit of equality.
ALSO: Take pictures! We will have a gallery page devoted to images of everyday people shaking hands and making their Declaration of Truth. Did you make your declaration today? To your family? Friends? Business associates? Elected official? Someone you disagree with? Equality is a single thing. Take a pic! We want to see it!
Yes! TOGE recognizes state and federal election days as our religious holidays. Equality is our religious objective, and it is greatly advanced when we carry the powerful TOGE Declaration of Truth in our hearts, and act it out in the voting booth. This secular act is indeed a sacred one. If your employer gives time off for religious holidays, inform them of ours.
No. We have founders who designed and direct the machine of the Temple. It is their vision that created TOGE, but there is no other hierarchical structure beyond that. All members, ordained or no, are equal. Ordination is available to all members if they choose it, but it does not infer any higher status in the eyes of TOGE.
You bet! All are welcome to join and get ordained. The ability to legally perform TOGE marriages will depend on local jurisdiction.
